06 August 1983 – Caught fire off Saldanah Bay en route from the Persian Gulf to Spain. Resulting inferno eventually broke the tanker in two and faced South Africa with the worst marine pollution threat in its history. Salvors secured a towline to the bow section of the burned out supertanker towering 20 m above the oil-laden sea so that the hulk with its deadly cargo of crude oil could be towed as far away from the coast as possible, subsequently Atlatech scuttled the wreck in a controlled manner to minimize pollution.
